Evaluation & Examination Policy | Prachya Bharati Senior Secondary School

Evaluation & Examination Policy

Our assessment policy combines the best practices of Continuous School-based Assessment (Formative) and Board-led Summative evaluations, aligned with the guidelines issued by SEBA (Classes I–X) and AHSEC (Classes XI–XII).

Key references: SEBA curricular & CCE guidance; AHSEC SOPs & Academic Regulations.

Purpose

Assess learning growth, reduce exam stress, encourage continuous improvement and ensure board compliance.

Audience

Students, Parents, Teachers, School Inspectors.

Overview

Prachya Bharati follows a two-component evaluation approach for school years: In-school Continuous Assessment (formative — class tests, quizzes, projects) and Board Summative Assessments for terminal evaluation where applicable. This structure follows SEBA's CCE principles up to Class X and AHSEC internal assessment requirements for Classes XI–XII.

Formative Assessment (FA)

Ongoing: class tests, assignments, projects, oral quizzes — used for feedback & learning progress.

Summative Assessment (SA)

End-of-term or board exams — measures attainment against syllabus & learning outcomes.

Practical / Project

Science practicals, vocational projects and internal practicals are conducted per Board SOPs (AHSEC / SEBA as applicable).

Primary (Class I – V)

At the primary level the emphasis is on nurturing learning habits, language skills and cognitive development. Assessment is largely formative and school-led; a combination of observations, portfolios, project work and small-term tests is used.

Assessment Components

  • Continuous Assessment: Regular classwork, oral checks, recitations, projects and portfolios.
  • Term Tests: Brief term-ending tests to check progress (low-stakes).
  • Promotion: Based on teacher evaluation and minimum competency requirements — remediation provided where needed.

Note: SEBA encourages a child-centred, continuous evaluation approach at primary stage to reduce stress and foster learning.

Middle (Class VI – VIII)

Assessment at middle stage introduces subject-wise formative and summative tests, along with project work and class assignments. The school maintains term assessments, unit tests and projects to track student progress.

Typical Marks Breakdown (example)

ComponentWeightNotes
Formative Assessments (quizzes, assignments)30%Multiple low-stakes checks across the term
Summative Term Test50%End-of-term theory test
Project / Practical / Oral20%Subject-specific practicals & projects

These percentages may be adapted by subject & class co-ordinators while following SEBA broad guidance.

Secondary (Class IX – X) — SEBA / HSLC

Classes IX–X follow a clear pattern of Formative and Summative assessments to prepare students for HSLC. SEBA’s syllabus & CCE guidance structure assessments with school-based periodic tests, term tests and board preparations.

Board-linked Components

  • School Unit Tests & Terminal Exams: Conducted across terms and used for internal records and formative feedback.
  • Practical/Internal Assessment: Where applicable (e.g., Science / Computer / Vocational), practical marks are part of the final marks as per SEBA norms.
  • Board Final Exam (HSLC): External, conducted by SEBA. Passing standards typically require a minimum level of attainment per subject (please refer to current SEBA notices for exact pass % or marks).

Sample Mark Distribution (subject to Board rules)

AssessmentExample Weight (per subject)
Formative (class tests, assignments)25–30%
Summative (Term/Annual)70–75% (includes board paper where applicable)

We follow SEBA circulars for final weightages & pass criteria; the school will publish yearly exam calendars and specific subject instructions.

Senior Secondary (Class XI – XII) — AHSEC

For Classes XI–XII we follow AHSEC academic regulations for internal examinations, practicals, project assessments and HS final exams. Important details about conduct of practicals / projects and internal assessment are laid down in AHSEC SOPs and Academic Regulations.

Internal Assessment & Practical / Project Rules

  • Internal Exams: Institutions conduct periodic unit tests and terminal internal exams. Records of internal marks are maintained as per AHSEC rules.
  • Practical / Project: Practical examinations and project assessments follow AHSEC SOP timelines and procedures; practicals are often held in-school with internal & external examiners where required.
  • Marking & Moderation: The school will submit internal assessment marks to AHSEC as required; moderation & verification follow AHSEC timelines.

Suggested Senior Secondary Mark Scheme (example)

ComponentWeight / Marks
Internal Assessment (periodic tests, assignments)10–20%
Practicals / Project (where applicable)20–30%
Board Final Theory50–70%

Exact marks for practicals and project schedules are released by AHSEC each year; the school will publish a dedicated exam circular for HS Final practicals per AHSEC SOP.

Promotion & Re-appearance

  • Promotion from XI to XII follows AHSEC minimum attendance & internal exam performance rules.
  • Students who miss a board practical due to genuine reasons will follow AHSEC's re-scheduling protocols (medical certificate etc.).

Examination Conduct & Code of Behaviour

All students must follow the school's exam code: arrive on time, carry necessary stationery, avoid malpractice and follow invigilator instructions.

General Rules

  • No electronic gadgets, smartwatches or phones are permitted in exam halls.
  • Any malpractice will be dealt with strictly — penalties may include cancellation of the paper or further disciplinary action.
  • Students must check the exam schedule and seating plan; any discrepancies should be reported to the Exams Office immediately.

Absentees & Medical Cases

Requests for re-examination or consideration must be accompanied by proper medical documentation and will be forwarded to the Board as needed.
